Immunizations for Sixth Graders

The following message is from the our school nurse for parents of 6th graders. If you have any questions, please call Nurse Hansen at the school on Tuesdays at 801-374-4950:

Effective May 7, 2007, a student entering the 7th grade must have proof of receiving the following immunizations:

This is in addition to other immunizations which should have already been completed (i.e. MMR, Polio).

*Previously the Td vaccine was required. However, the Td vaccine can be given to satisfy the Tdap requirement.

**If a student is 13+ years of age, two doses of Varicella vaccine should be given at least four weeks apart.

Additionally, all Utah students, kindergarten through grade 12, are now required to have two doses of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine, rather one dose of the MMR and one additional dose of the measles vaccine.

Our school will be having a FUN competition with prizes and drawings for all students who get their immunizations and bring the record to school!

Sunset View Alumni Gives Back

For several years, Sunset View alumni, Bob Edwards, has donated funds and supplies to classroom teachers at Sunset View to express gratitude for teachers that inspired him as a young elementary student.  Beginning this year, Mr. Edwards will pay tribute to his teachers, Miss Gardner and Mrs. James, by sponsoring an annual school wide writing contest, with winning students receiving The Gardner James Children’s Book Award.

The first contest this year was for students in fourth through sixth grades. Many students participated in the contest and six winners were awarded The Gardner James Book Award: Tia Hone, Mackenzie Haws, Katy Uhl, Haley Bechthold, Angela Liljestrand, and Jessica McClellan.  The second contest for students in kindergarten through third grade will be held later this year.

Sharing a story with author Brandon Mull. Students spend lunchtime with author Brandon Mull.

The winners of the fourth through sixth grade contest won lunch with New York Times Bestselling Author, Brandon Mull, a certificate, and two published books of their winning entries – one for themselves and one for the school library collection.

Following lunch with the author, all fourth through sixth grade students at Sunset View gathered in the gym where they listened to an exciting presentation by Brandon Mull.  He encouraged students to use their imaginations through reading and exploring their own creativity.

Absences and Tardies

One of the greatest things parents can do to support their children in school is making sure they have good attendance and are not tardy. The most important reason is for learning. Despite best efforts best efforts to do “make up work,” students cannot learn as well when they miss school. When parents are contemplating a vacation, please consider planning them around school breaks to avoid learning loss. Additionally, district policy and state law require good attendance. Poor attendance can result in students not being promoted and/or parents receiving referrals to truancy court. Last, poor attendance affects school ratings. Schools can fail to meet state and federal standards simply for having below level attendance. Your help in making sure your students are here and on time is appreciated!

Special Needs Sports Programs

Do you know of children with special needs who could benefit from athletic programs? Here is information about several community programs for these children; they are available to anyone with mental and/or physical needs that prevent them from playing on a regular city league. Different sports are offered during the year and the fees vary depending on the sport and the area. Mapleton City, along with Keri Beardall, host VIP Soccer, VIP Basketball and VIP T-ball. Basketball will begin in January and go through the end of February. For more info contact Keri Beardall at 801-489-4904 or Mapleton City Rec at 801-806-9114. Orem hosts Adaptive Swimming, Adaptive T-ball, and Fishing. Swimming lessons run year round. For more information on swimming contact Jon Lau at 801-229-7159. For T-ball and Fishing, contact Mark Lindsay at 801-229-7158.

Weather

As the weather is turning colder, please make sure students come to school prepared for the weather each day. Students will usually go outside for recess. Inside recess will be held if:  1. The temperature is below 25 degrees, 2. Poor air quality (AQI above 150), or 3. There is substantial precipitation. If a parent requests a student to stay inside for illness, a note needs to be sent each day. Before school, students will wait outside or in the cafeteria.

Documents Available

Several school committees work each year to establish various plans. They are available for you to view. Feel free to look up the following plans on our website or in the front office:
