Degree Info

The Provo School district is committed to state-of-the-art use of technology. The district has invested significant resources into the acquisition of technology equipment, as well as helping teachers learn how to use it.  It is the intent of the technology staff, myself, as well as Julie Shaw and Mallory Snyder, that we assist the staff and students at Sunset View as they use computers and other technology resources to reach the educational goals established by the Utah State Department of Education and other education entities.

Changes in Technology

Sunset View now has six mobile computer carts, as well as desktop computers available in each classroom.  This means that students have more and more opportunities to learn and create using computers.  Each teacher has a laptop computer which s/he can connect to a video projector and interactive white board, allowing them to project onto the screen anything they can display on their computer.  For example, the teacher can pull up a document that perhaps s/he wants the class to read and analyze. Or, maybe the teacher has a video clip showing a time lapse of a plant growing. Or perhaps the teacher wants to demonstrate how to use an online protractor to measure an angle. S/he can show the students how and then let them try it on the computers they have at their desks. Both our math and reading programs have online components that allow students to do assignments and take tests on the computer. Why, they can even access their textbooks at home!  Go to these links to see how:

Pearson Online Math- Your child has a login to get into their own account.  There is a Parents' link at the top of the student page that allows you to see results of the work your child has done online.

Treasures- Students can access stories and activities to help them improve their reading skills.

eMints

Sunset View now has 4 eMints classrooms, with 15 desktop computers in each.  eMints is a system of instruction that was originally developed in Missouri and is rapidly being adopted around the country.  eMints combines educational practices that research has shown to be effective along with a strong emphasis on the use of technology.  With 15 computers available to students, all day, every day, students have a much greater opportunity to do their work on the computer.  Students thus work cooperatively on projects, both on the computer, and with more traditional materials.  Projects emphasize student research on all aspects of a topic in depth and creation of a product that has some kind of application or relevance beyond the classroom.
